How Do I get my Colorado Medical Marijuana Card?

The state of Colorado has set out a very specific application process and criteria for registering for a medical marijuana card. This has been done to ensure that only those who qualify for MMJ receive cards. The process falls under the auspices of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

It takes between four and six weeks to complete the process once the application has been submitted, so you will want to take that time frame into consideration for your medical planning needs.

In order to apply for a medical marijuana registration card you must follow several steps. First, you must be a Colorado resident and be able to show proof of your identity and residence with your application. You must currently be receiving treatment for a qualifying medical condition. If you previously had a diagnosis of a debilitating medical condition, but the disease is no longer active and you are not currently receiving treatment, you will be denied. You must be examined by a doctor with whom you have a “bona fide” physician-patient relationship. And, you must submit a complete application packet.

The Colorado Medical Marijuana statue stipulates very specific conditions that qualify for MMJ. Medical Marijuana may be recommended for Cancer, Glaucoma, HIV or AIDS positive patients. In addition, if you have a chronic or debilitating disease or condition that produces one or more of the following and a physician believes it may be alleviated by the use of MMJ you may qualify.
• Cachexia
• Persistent muscle spasms
• Seizures
• Severe nausea
• Severe pain

It is important to know that since the program began in 2001, there have been no new conditions added to the list.

Once they receive your application, the state will conduct an initial review to make sure all criteria is met and the non-refundable application fee is included. If approved, your card will be mailed to you. If not, you will be notified via mail including the necessary corrections. You have 60 days to make these corrections or you have to start the process all over again. If approved with corrections, you card is mailed. If at any point your application is denied, it means you have violated a statue or Board of Health regulation. If your application is denied, you must wait six months before reapplying. There is an appeals process. You may send a letter to the registry requesting an appeals hearing. You must request the hearing within 30 calendar days from the postmark date of the denial notice.

Medical marijuana registry cards do expire. Make sure you keep it up to date, or you have to start the process all over again. Renewals take between four to six weeks. But, don’t start the renewal process too early. If you attempt to renew your card more than 60 days before expiration, the state will consider it a duplicate application, keep your money and your original card will still expire on the original date.
