The Charlotte’s Web Medical Hemp Act of 2014
Image your young child suffers from multiple seizures a day. You tried multiple medications but none of them seem to be helping your poor innocent child, not to mention the medications they are taking have harsh side effects that are making them sicker as they get older. Now image you hear of a life altering medication for children with seizures, the only problem this medication is only legal in a few states and your state is not one of them. It is also illegal federally so transporting it to where you live is close to impossible, not to mention illegal. What is a parent to do?
Many families across the country have run into similar situations with their children. If they can afford it they pack up and move their lives to a state in which they can get medical marijuana for their sick child. However picking up and moving your life can be costly not to mention tiring, having to find jobs and a home all while dealing with a sick child. If only there was an easier way to get the medication to you rather than having to move across the country. This is exactly what The Charlotte’s Web Medical Hemp Act of 2014 is supposed to accomplish.
On July 28, 2014 a bill was introduced to Congress that will make certain forms and levels of medical marijuana legal for people who need it across the nation. It will allow for cannabis oil that is high in cannabidiol (CBD) and low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to legal federally, so that families can get the help they need anywhere in the United States. The bill named after a strain of medical marijuana created for a young girl named Charlotte in Colorado. This strain contains high amounts of CBD but less than .03% of THC, the chemical that gives you the “high” effect. It has helped Charlotte have a reduced amount of seizures, she went from having over 300 seizures a week to around two a month.
This bill is finally giving people some hope for the future of medical marijuana. Although not yet passed spreading the word about the effects medical marijuana can have on people with seizures and other medical problems is just going to get us the next step closer to having medical marijuana made federally legal.
